Abstract

The research aims to identify heat waves in the summer and autumn months in Misurata Municipality by analysis the daily maximum temperature data available in the NASA Global Climate Database, to reveal their numbers and classification, and to determine the recurrence periods of hot days in which the maximum temperature exceeds its average over 34 consecutive years for the period 2000-2024. In addition to analysis trends in maximum temperature, number of hot days and heat waves using moving averages, t-test and regression analysis, The statistical methods used revealed indicators of an increase in the annual and seasonal averages of maximum temperature, the number of hot days, and heat waves in the study area at a statistical significance level of less than 0.05. The number of heat waves reached 75, including 32 short heat waves, 38 medium heat waves, and about five long heat waves. 27 heat waves were distributed between the two study periods in the first period, 2000-2011, at a rate of 36%, including 15 short heat waves and 12 medium heat waves. While the second period of the study, 2012-2024, recorded 48 heat waves, representing 64% of the total, distributed among 17 short waves, 26 medium waves, and five long heat waves. It is worth noting that the heat waves during the second period were longer and more intense than the first period, which did not record any long heat waves.
