The family field and its relationship to directing children towards university specialization

Abstract

The choice of a university major is not an easy decision for students due to the rapid and noticeable development in the world. As a crucial decision that determines their future, this choice is closely linked to the family. The family, as a social institution, relies on various fundamental functions and components. Being the individual's first community, it contributes to shaping their personality and prepares them for later stages beyond the family environment.

Therefore, understanding the role of the family in guiding their children towards a university major is the main focus of this research. The study aims to examine the impact of educational, social, and economic factors of the family on the choice of the children's university major.

The study raises several questions, including:

• What is the role of the educational level of the family in choosing a university major?
• What is the role of the social status of the family and its relation to the choice of a university major?
• What is the role of the economic status of the family and its relation to the choice of a university major?

The descriptive method was employed, and a questionnaire was used as the primary tool to gather information from the sample participants. The questionnaire was distributed among 100 male and female students from different departments of the College of Education.

After analyzing and interpreting the statistics, the following results were obtained:

• The educational level of parents plays a significant and important role in assisting children in choosing their university majors.
• The social status of the family does not have a noticeable effect on the choice of a university major.
• The economic status of the family plays an important role in the choice of a university major.
