Heavy Metal Contamination of Honey in Some Valleys of Misrata Municipality

Abstract

This research aims to estimate the concentrations of copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn), while also examining the pH levels and ash content of four honey samples (Spring and Sidr) collected from selected apiaries in the valleys of Misrata city. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) was employed for the analysis and quantification of heavy metals following the dry oxidation (ashing) of the samples. The analytical results revealed that the ash content ranged from 0.31% to 0.426%, which is within the internationally permissible limits. The pH levels ranged between 4.45 and 5.38, slightly exceeding the internationally recommended range. Regarding heavy metal concentrations, the findings were compliant with global standards, with recorded values of 0.013–0.996 ppm for copper, 0.000–0.001 ppm for cadmium, 0.008–0.402 ppm for manganese, 0.003–0.220 ppm for chromium, 0.000–0.326 ppm for zinc, and 0.000 ppm for lead. These results demonstrate the high quality of the honey collected from the valleys of Misrata and confirm its safety for human consumption
