Abstract

: Muhammad ibn Ali al-  Sanusi was among those deeply affected by the state of Muslims in the 18th century CE. He studied their conditions and subsequently undertook reform efforts. He emerged as a reformer and thinker advocating renewal and reform, and succeeded in founding the Sanusi movement, which was an application of his reformist ideas. This movement played a significant role in advancing the call to reform the conditions of Muslims in Tripoli and other parts of North Africa, and in spreading Islam in some regions of Africa. The elder al-Sanusi lived a rich and eventful life, traveling to several countries throughout the Islamic world.

This research clarifies the Sanusi movement, its development, and its role in consolidating the principles of Islam. It also explores the origin of the name and the founder of the Sanusi movement, Sayyid Muhammad ibn Ali al-Sanusi, who established the movement and attempted to spread it in the Hijaz and parts of North Africa in general. He then focused on Tripoli, where he settled and where his mission became particularly active.
