Abstract

The significance of this study lies in its focus on how media professionals select and frame the issues and events covered by the media. This is particularly important given that certain terrorist acts may be reported with good intentions, yet inadvertently contribute to expanding the reach and influence of terrorism.

This study aimed to explore how media professionals handle issues of extremism and terrorism, applying its analysis to a sample of journalists working in Yemeni media outlets.

The study reached several key findings, the most notable of which are:

  1. Terrorism-related issues rank as a top priority in the media coverage of Yemeni journalists, with more than 50% of the study’s participants indicating this preference. This reflects the broad impact of terrorism on both the Arab and international arenas.
  2. Terrorist operations tend to have limited influence, confined to their specific temporal and geographical contexts, until they are covered by the media. Once reported—through news stories, analyses, and live broadcasts—these events transcend their original time and place, which in turn amplifies the impact of terrorist groups, grants their operations wider notoriety, and provides them with opportunities and advantages.
