Abstract

This research aims to present a treatise on the science of prosody, namely the tractate titled: (Nazm 'Illal al-Naqs fi al-A'arid wa al-Adhrab'), from the works of Sheikh Muhammad Muftah Qurayyoo. The manuscript copy I obtained was typed on a typewriter and consists of fifteen lines of rajaz poetry, in which the poet addresses deficiencies in the metrical feet specific to (prosody and poetic meters) in poetic forms. He lists nine types of defects, which are: (deletion, pruning, cutting, truncation, shortening, breaking, elision, cessation, and oblique alteration), then he defines these defects, mentioning some of the metrical feet they affect.

My work on it came divided into two parts: a theoretical part in which I provided a brief introduction to the definition of the science of prosody, an introduction to the author and his poem. I proceeded to analyze the poem and comment on it by rewriting the text of the poem and placing the text in bold parentheses to distinguish it from the analysis and comments. In my work, I also addressed the prosodic terms and commented on every point that deserved commentary. Perhaps one of the most important conclusions is that the science of prosody is crucial for appreciating poetic text, yet it has not received as much attention as other sciences like rhetoric and grammar. Furthermore, a poet must know the prosodic rules and metrical deviations to master poetic meter and music. It became clear through presenting this poem that Sheikh Qaryu was a scholar of prosody and rhyme, and he mastered them completely.
