Parental Attitudes Towards Their Mentally Disabled Children at the Mental Abilities Development Center in Misrata

Abstract

 

The research aims to identify parental attitudes towards their mentally disabled children at the Center for Mental Abilities Development in Misrata.

The research community consists of mothers of mentally disabled children at the Center for the Development of Mental Abilities in Misrata , whose number was (95) mothers, and the research sample numbered (48) mothers, who are the mothers who filled out the questionnaire..

The research data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS statistical software , and the researcher reached the following conclusions:

There are differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities in terms of acceptance , but no differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities in terms of overprotection or rejection . There are no differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities attributable to the child's gender. There are no differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities attributable to the economic level. There are no differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities in terms of acceptance attributable to the educational level. There are differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities in terms of overprotection attributable to the educational level. There are no differences in parental attitudes toward their children with intellectual disabilities in terms of rejection attributable to the educational level .

 

Research recommendations

  1. Parents' attitudes towards their mentally disabled children should be positive and effective.
  2. Training specialists working at the mental disability center to guide and educate families on how to deal with disabled children.
  3. The state and society should pay attention to the segment of people with mental disabilities in all psychological and social aspects.
  4. Developing educational programs to raise awareness among parents about the importance of using positive methods in dealing with their mentally disabled children in order to give them self-confidence, through which they can be socially adapted.

Establishing several awareness programs to educate the community about disability, its causes, ways to deal with it, and how to prevent it.
