Monitoring tests of metformin tablets 500 mg produced by different companies and available at local pharmacies in Misurata city

Abstract

The widespread use of metformin tablets as an oral hypoglycemic agent from patients suffering from type II diabetes mellites, led to the presence of different brands on pharmaceutical market, with different quality and efficacy. Evaluation tests like weight test, solubility test using HCl acid, Friability test and hardness test were selected to test the quality of four famous brands (A, B ,C ,D) of metformin tablets with a strength of 500 mg in the local market in Misurata city. The results revealed that, most of metformin tablets brands within the limits of the American Pharmacopoeia USP in all tests, while some other comply partially with the American Pharmacopoeia USP specification.
