Abstract... Epidermolysis bullosa refers to a group of rare genetic disorders marked by recurrent blister formation and fragility of the skin and can affect any epithelial tissues in the body. The aim of the paper to presents the cutaneous as well as the extracutaneous manifestations of epidermolysis bullosa among Libyan patients, and highlights the association between extracutaneous manifestation and family history. A retrospective single-center case-control study on patients diagnosed with epidermolysis bullosa registered in the genodermatosis outpatient clinic of the dermatology department at Misrata Medical Center. Ethical approval was obtained. Data were collected from patients' files into an excel sheet and then analyzed using SPSS software. Seventy-three patients were included. Mean age was 5.7 years and male to female ratio is 1:1.6. The most common skin manifestations were bullae with erythema, crusts, and erosions. 69.8% of patients (51 patients) developed extracutaneous manifestations, such as oral blisters, dental hypoplasia, nail dystrophy, alopecia, constipation, dysphagia, or corneal opacities. Among which, 42 patients have a positive family history of epidermolysis bullosa. The odds ratio is 2.6667 and the P-value is 0.0884. Although, 42 patients (75%) with a positive family history of epidermolysis bullosa have extracutaneous manifestations. Statistical analysis did not show a strong association. Further studies with a bigger sample size are required.
Abstract... Bariatric surgery seems to be the most effective treatment for obesity and obesityrelated metabolic comorbidities. The positive effect that bariatric surgery has had on participants in several areas must be balanced by the reports of the challenging nature of the full lifestyle change. This study aimed to assess the dietary patterns and lifestyle habits of patients before laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). A hospital-based cross-sectional study was performed on 40 patients who underwent LSG, who were selected randomly before undergoing LSG. The study data were collected using a questionnaire and direct interviews. Where socio-demography, lifestyle, and nutrition were assessed. Pearson correlation was used to find a correlation between different variables. The results revealed that the significantly different (p=0.000) of body weight (126.7±3.841) kg and daily meals intake (2.8±0.116) of participants. The majority of participants (58%) fall between age 31-50 years are female (65%). The greater (65%) had university degree. Most participants were married (68%) and employed (40%). The majority of participants (75%) had a family history with obesity, while many participants (23%) had failed to manage their weight when practiced a therapeutic diet & exercise regimen as first option before the LSG operation. The results of our study have revealed that bariatric surgery candidates had a history of obesity as well as unhealthy lifestyle habit. To ensure long-term postoperative success, patients must be prepared to adopt comprehensive lifestyle changes.
Abstract... The study focuses on the analysis of herbal honey mixtures (HHMs) available in the Libyan market. Due to the illegal adulteration of HHMs, there have been concerns regarding their harmful pharmacological effects on consumers. The specific compounds of interest in this study are sildenafil (SLD) and tadalafil (TAD), which are commonly used as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
To detect the presence of SLD and TAD in the HHMs, the researchers employed High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) as the analytical method. The mobile phase used in the analysis consisted of a gradient elution system comprising 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile (ACN). The detection wavelength was set at 290 nm.
Out of the seven samples analysed, two were found to contain TAD, confirming the presence of this compound in the tested HHMs. This finding highlights the issue of adulteration and the need for quality control measures to ensure the safety and efficacy of herbal products in the market.
Abstract... Developmental dysplasia of the hip joint is spectrum of anatomical abnormalities of the hip joint, in which the femoral head has an abnormal relationship with the acetabulum. The study conducted to correlate between hip click and its ultrasound finding, as a screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip joint. A prospective study included 40 infants, age ranging from 3 to 17 weeks of age, during the period from January 2019 to December 2019 at Misurata Medical Center. Coronal ultrasound views obtained for both hips, alpha and beta angles were measured, then the degree of joint stability were evaluated by Graf’s criteria. Among the 40 referred infants with hip click, 12 infants show positive ultrasound results (Graff classification rather than type I) four of the positive infants had other risk factors. Eight infants had hip click as isolated risk factor. The study shows that, the presence of hip click can be considered as an important indicator for developing developmental dysplasia of the hip, and underscores the importance of early detection and intervention. It is strongly recommended that, infants with isolated hip click should undergo ultrasound screening or be referred to an orthopedic specialist for further evaluation particularly when associated with other risk factors.
